Hello, dreadful journey!
here I am and in front
of your giant face
like a sparrow
caged and walled in
by someone’s fingers–
you wretched, rugged road.

got me where you want me–
trapped, secluded
in the mud, drained.
I’m at your mercy–
you wretched, rugged road.

this isn’t the neighborhood.
isn’t the house I saw.
isn’t the car I drove.
isn’t my body standing there.
these aren’t my hairs and teeth.
each day is the same
and I’m at your mercy–
you wretched, rugged road.

I’m fuming–
fuming in your grips
and no longer afraid
of your mighty hold.
go ahead and crush me!
I don’t care anymore.

With every coming day
and firmer squeeze,
I’m becoming a rock
within your walls.
