dinner boys are unnecessary
to window a past of shed snakeskins
hushed of meat

everyone leaves on last-laugh ships
tricky grandfathers too

when the wilderness returns
& the time of education is over
I’ll be cut down, an old diseased tree, hazard to traffic,
the stump left in the ground
for years after

but I don’t think I’ll be coming back
