Broken Sky and Urban Edge

Broken Sky

This is the old torpedo testing station just outside Arrochar on Loch Long, Scotland. Subject to rapid dereliction after the fire and too many restrictions for redevelopment, all work has stalled, and the site is rapidly becoming just a pile of rubble. I was there in 2015 when it still had some interesting aspects.

 Urban Edge

Same view from another part, with clanking chains on stormy nights…

Photographer’s Notes: Taken with a Nikon D600 with a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f3.5 PC lens.

The first shot is captured with three identical shots with different exposures (background, glass, inside of window frame), but blended rather than high dynamic range, which kills the impression of light. The focus point was the window and would’ve been around f11/16 which the lens is well capable of. The background isn’t really in focus but being smooth water has a naturally high acutance so looks sharp, clouds are naturally soft and the distance normally hazy, the separation is supposed to add depth. On a tripod on a fairly still day so shutter speed irrelevant.

The second is the same lens, camera and settings, but this time just two exposures and each tone-mapped before blending. Again I dislike the way the “sliders” kill the impression of light by moving everything towards “equal” but do like the surreal way it abstracts the scene, almost like a video game graphic.

Strictly an amateur and largely self taught I have always had a passion for photography, and am especially fond of large format Black & White film. I can sometimes be seen staggering around Scotland with a heavy camera that I don't actually seem to take many photos with. Occasionally it all comes together and I get some images I like to show.
