who sit with understanding.
Focused, iridescent eyes
attend to your wet ones.

Well-timed hops on your lap,
headbutts; well-placed paws,
chins by thighs on couches.

Furry steps tap out
you are not alone. We got this:
anxiety, infertility,

marriage, adoption,
parenting, childbirth,
divorce, depression and death.

When it is time,
they become unassuming,
whisper apologies in corners

for the pain and inconvenience
their passing will cause.
With a last look

they assure you
of a practiced strength
to handle things from here.
