Acrylic on burlap canvas
18″ x 24″

Decay is the theme here. My two inspirations were pond scum and tree diseases.

I mixed baking soda, baking powder, and salt into the gesso to make a gritty surface. The first layer involved alternating between brushwork, paint splattering, and water spraying. I then sprinkled tobacco leaf and ash onto the wet paint, then I worked some eye shadow, basil, and cumin into the mixture. I used liquid and spray varnish to make it all stick. There are also larger salt crystals embedded into the varnish, along with another layer of spray varnish.
