i had an emotion today
but don’t know its name

there was a blackbird on the lawn
10 feet away head cocked
eyeing or listening
i watched

then she bent over quickly
bobbed her tail in the air
like a gust of wind had caught her dress

that is when the first emotion happened

i looked away
as if from a glimpse
of tomorrow’s laundry basket

she flew to a bush
when i found her again
she was looking at me

that is when the emotion without a name happened

and i said to her
this garden is all yours
i will let no one hurt you
for this is who we are
