never was a lap cat
until the twentieth year

when he stopped grooming
eating & drinking

lying quiet, stoic
on the bed she made

with his favorite
blanket and cushion

on Mothers Day
a stumbling into the kitchen

where she gathered
his matted fur and bones

laid him
on her lap

kneading his ears
speaking in hushed tones

stayed put
for her
until his time ran out
