Each moment splits like a river choosing its bank,
and we small mapmakers
decide which way it floods.
A thought is the first weather: something shifts inside,
and somewhere a hand stays still instead of reaching,
a word goes unsaid, a door
keeps its quiet instead of its swing.
We call this small,
but small things pile up,
like coral built one grain at a time,
until a life is nothing more
than the layers left behind by choices no one saw.
Think of it this way:
freedom feels heaviest
in the second we spend it,
each yes closing a hundred doors that almost opened.
And still the world is sewn from threads this thin,
your kindness at the counter,
my silence in a room,
a stranger choosing to stay one more minute in the rain,
with someone who only needed to be stayed with.
We are not writers of some finished book.
We are the hand pressing the pen,
choosing,
even in stillness,
how deep the ink goes.
