If you ever slept
in your clothes, waking somewhere
the next day that you
didn’t recognize, ever
closed your heart to some-
one you should have opened it
to or your mind to
the world for fear of having
it changed or opened
your home to someone you maybe
shouldn’t have or if

the dark, blindly, not
knowing if it was a dream

is you’ve become accustomed
to referring to
as reality or have
mimed your favorite
guitar line with a broom or
tennis racket or
whatever was at hand and
didn’t give a damn
who saw you doing it or
tried to call down the
moon, many a night, to have
a drink with you when
no-one else would or maybe
even washed ashore
one morning from the sinking
ship of your own life,
bedraggled with seaweed and
sand, ever paid hard
cash for soft promises, punched
a mirror just for
looking at you the wrong way,
bled like a stuck pig,
even just once, then welcome
to the club, motherfucker.
