What’s the point of crying
in your beer, you did your
best to live as a loving human,
even toward the un-
loveliest rats and roaches
and lizards, two-legged
and six-legged, and all who
occupy a temporary strip of dirt.
The years you lived in Hawaii, one
of the most spectacular places
on Earth, you saw rain and
bugs of impossible quantity
and size. The watery mornings
shone with them. You almost loved them.
You learned to lift your foot higher.
