Past & present exist here
I bring fig newtons & coffee to pass the time
voices tell of a certain photographer who lives in Japan, in Hiroshima
some things survived the 1945 bomb

but we cannot sleep, if we do, we will wake up as different people in a different place
almost naked children hanging onto trees
phones ring, we answer them in case it is someone we might know
the TV continues with its many stories allowing us to listen to the dead

after the bomb, the dogs that survived grew very hungry
they were hunted down & shot
Jewish boys were imported for the work
the carcass was skinned, the guts removed, and left
the bones were defleshed, cleaned, & packed in boxes for transport to Israel

decades later, the edges of these things began to reappear,
as the dead dogs chose their new owners
one by one
