i don’t think about him much
he wasn’t very good

and i wasn’t either

but marked in red pen

at the top
of my first poem for class

he wrote—
“Watch your use of cliches.”

it hurt so freakin bad
to read that

i learned
i shouldn’t use them

and now all these years later
i can see one in a poem

they stick out like they were
written in red
