My friend, a poet, over a cup of coffee,
depressed & roaming around in his head
like a bear looking for berries while waiting
for the salmon to run would, if he could,
re-attend his wedding as a guest,
sit on the bride’s side behind her father
& whisper, Don’t give your daughter away.
The young man she’s about to marry will write poetry.
