Snowed in
& out
the window

I watched a robin
flit branch to branch
pecking on frozen bark

& listening

a rustle
in my skull

a memory
of something
forgotten
& too late

I hit my head
with an open palm

was I trying to fix
what was broken
or was it self-flagellation?

I thought for a second
a little door
in my forehead
opened
& a silent cuckoo
popped out

I started laughing.
Who wouldn’t?

ha-ha, ha-ha, ha-ha!

& how silly this sounds –

toboggan
